Mark Flips for Laos

by Allie on April 9, 2010

We’ve been traveling through Laos the past week; it’s hotter than either of us ever have experienced (100 degrees + with the humidity of Florida), and the pace of life is about as fast as you’d expect it to be given that everyone is melting here. Most days involve deciding whether to have a Beer Lao dark, or a Beer Lao light, or perhaps go out on a limb and have some Lao Lao (the local moonshine) which incidentally gives quite a headache the next morning.

We spent our first three Laos days in Vientiane, the capitol of Laos. We stayed in a really spectacular boutique hotel and spent most of our time sleeping, eating, and walking around town. Vientiane is on the Mekong River, and from our hotel room we could look across it and see Thailand. After touring in Vietnam, we were still a little “templed out”, so we didn’t visit any of the wats or pagodas…we visited the Scandinavian Bakery and ate tuna sandwiches instead. Yum.

After three days of vegging out, we took a bus to Vang Vieng. Five hours, windy roads, air conditioning cooled the inside temp to 85 degrees. We were glad to get to Vang Vieng!

We spent our Easter “tubing” down the river here in Vang Vieng, which is lined with zip lines, 60′ tall rope swings, and 100′ tall waterslides, all ending in the river. Mark learned on his first zip line attempt the importance of letting go before you reach the “stopper” at the end of the line, which brings the trolly to an instantaneous stop (though not the rest of his body, which resulted in a complete 360 degree back flip followed by a belly flop). Of course we had a Flip handy, and the moment has been captured for posterity.

I could watch that for hours… Thanks for the chuckle Mark!

The last few seconds are especially entertaining in slow-mo. What’s even funnier are all the bruises that showed up on Mark’s legs. Serious ouch.

I would rate that a 9.2. Good dismount but feet not together…
Looked like a lot of fun, where is the video of you doing it Allie?
