These are a few of our favorite experiences – the short list of the places, services and foods we found exceptional. These are our personal recommendations and we are not paid or sponsored by anyone here, but tell them we sent you.

  • Austria: Sound of Music tour in Salzburg (if you’re a fan!), catacombs under St. Stephens in Vienna, Schonbrunn Palace
  • Cambodia: Tonle Sap (a day trip from Siem Reap)
  • Greece: Naxos – climb Mt. Zeus, rent a car and get lost in mountain villages; Santorini – visit Oia
  • Japan: Nara, visit an onsen, walk by the rivers in Kyoto, Tsukiji fish market
  • Laos: Vang Vieng and Luang Prabang (especially during Lao New Year!)
  • Nepal: Annapurna Circuit, Chitwan National Park
  • The Netherlands: Van Gogh museum (worth the crazy wait), Anne Frank House
  • Slovenia: staying in a private house, hiking in Bohinj, wandering by the river in Ljubljana
  • Sri Lanka: Galle – cool Muslim/Dutch/Christian fort town, Ella – a hill country tea town
  • Thailand: Paradise Lost Resort on Ko Kradan, diving the Surin and Similan islands, Bangkok
  • Turkey: Cappadocia, Istanbul
  • Vietnam: Sapa

  • Austria: Sachertorte with whipped cream, apple strudel
  • Cambodia: Bamboo cake, Cambodian BBQ, Bamboo soup from The Sugar Palm restaurant
  • Greece: Ouzo, Naxian red wine, baklava, feta cheese
  • Japan: mochi, sushi, gyokuro tea
  • Laos: Beer Lao, toasted sticky rice, pork laap, Lao coffee
  • Nepal: Momos – steamed dumplings stuffed with vegetables or meat, served with tasty sauces, sukoti, tongba (fermented hot beer)
